FFHMPR Open Space, Recreation and Soc. Srvs Subcommittee Meeting Notes Dec 3, 2010 Participants: Lisa Schwartz, Pat Llodra, Mike Mossbarger, Paul Lundquist, Deborra Zukowski
Date: Friday, December 3, 2010
Discussion Topic: Getting a better understanding of the needs of Kevin’s Community Center (KCC)
Preface: Given recent coverage in the press, we moved the discussion of KCC needs from Group B (telephone) to Group A (face-to-face). As part of our investigations, we need to understand and articulate the needs for our public participation in the larger scope of our overall review of the Fairfield Hills Master Plan Review. Our intent is not to disrupt the steps being undertaken by the Board of Selectmen in helping KCC find closure, but rather to lift the discussion up a level to allow all parties to better understand alternatives and impacts of a given choice.
Status Quo

Current footprint: 2600 sq ft

Current Leasing: End date is 11/2011, though there have been discussions about extending it monthly or quarterly. It is possible that the lease could be extended up to a year.

KCC needs to find a more permanent home. Current situation is extremely disruptive to the board. Moving locations means bureaucratic paper work (e.g., state reviews, etc).

$500,000 grant for “a building on Fairfield Hills Campus.” One assumption behind grant is that KCC will grow. There is some uncertainty about the grant, given that all potential state funding is on the table during ongoing budget discussions. However, the discussion about the merits of various alternatives should continue, independent of this uncertainty.

Hours are 1-5 PM Wednesday afternoons. Hope to go to 3 days per week

Room to grow to 4,000 sq ft

Handicap parking and accessibility

At this time, privacy concerns or issues relating to potential neighbors do not appear to be a limiting factor, re: location on the campus. However, this topic needs to be addressed more fully by the KCC board.
